Music at Timber Drive
Elementary School

My name is Beth Palmieri and I am the music teacher at Timber Drive Elementary School. As an undergraduate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, I majored in percussion performance and I am very excited about using my knowledge of percussion instruments to teach Timber Drive students about music.

In graduate school, I studied Orff-Schulwerk and find this process to be a wonderful way to teach music to children. Carl Orff was a German composer whose interest in education led to his process of teaching music to children called Orff-Schulwerk. Orff-Schulwerk is based on the idea of learning music by hearing and making music first, then transferring that knowledge to reading and writing music later. The process uses familiar folk-like melodies and percussion instruments to help students learn music by actively creating it.
